Back pain

back pain in the lumbar region

Lower back pain can often bother a person, they are caused by various circumstances. The causes of back pain in the lumbar region are associated with vertebrogenic diseases or pathological changes affect the internal organs. The lower back periodically hurts due to systemic pathologies. The location of the pain syndrome is different: in many patients, pain can be on the right or left side, below or above the lumbar segment.

Often such pain in the spine is a sign of pregnancy in its initial or final period. With acute pain syndrome, hyperthermia is observed, the patient needs urgent treatment. First, you need to contact a therapist, he will assess the patient's condition, recommend other specialists for consultation and treatment. To find out why a person is worried about pain in the spine, various diagnostic measures are prescribed (MRI, CT, ultrasound).

Characteristics of the syndrome

Lumbar pain is:

  • Strong.
  • Sharp.
  • Aching.
  • Chronic.
  • Moved.

Also, soreness can be mild, painful, paroxysmal, pulsating. The causes of severe pain are caused by osteochondrosis. The loin always hurts in a person: when walking, sitting, lifting heavy objects, coughing, sneezing. Such pain sometimes radiates to the legs, and the lower extremities can also become numb, paresthesias occur. If the patient has sciatica of the lumbar and sacral vertebral segment, then not only the lower back will be very painful.

Pain sensations will cover the buttock, thighs, pelvis, lower legs. They will intensify when walking, coughing, changing body position. If you experience similar symptoms of back pain, you should contact a neurologist. To keep the lumbar zone in a physiological position, sleep is recommended on a hard mattress.

Acute pain is observed:

  • when stretching muscle tissue;
  • long stay in a non-physiological position;
  • lifting heavy objects;
  • injury;
  • abruptly executed movements;
  • hypothermia.

At home, you can be treated with gels or ointments that relieve inflammation with pain. They will improve microcirculation, eliminate puffiness. If the pain does not go away within 2-3 days, then medical help is needed. When the back hurts in the lumbar region on the first day, then you need to be on bed rest.

Aching soreness is caused by myositis of the lumbar zone. The patient's movements are constrained, he feels an ache with any movement. To get rid of pain, you first need to stand under a warm shower, then dress warmly. Any physical activity is unacceptable. You can treat pain syndrome with warming ointments.

back pain

Chronic pain develops due to deforming spondylosis. A patient with this pathology is worried about pain in the lumbar zone, sensitivity may be lost, and lethargy will appear in the legs. Chronic pain is also caused by ankylosing spondylitis with impaired metabolism, malignant neoplasms. In this case, it will not work to treat the lower back with folk remedies. If the lower back hurts very much for 3 days, then medical help is needed.

With displaced pain, the patient feels unpleasant sensations in the lumbar zone, he thinks that the cause of the symptoms is in the pathologies of the spine. But such pains are caused by pathological processes of the internal organs of the pelvic zone, oncology, pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract or malfunctioning of the kidney.

The causes of back pain are interconnected with the formation of sciatica, lumbago. These pathological processes are the result of osteochondrosis changes in the lower back, protrusions, herniated discs located between the vertebrae. If several vertebrae have displaced, then the spine will also hurt. If the lower back hurts constantly in men, women, then the nerve endings of the spine are irritated, the muscles and ligaments are swollen.

In a woman, pain in the lumbar zone is caused by cystitis, pyelonephritis, urolithiasis, or her uterine appendages are inflamed. In a man, soreness in the lower back may appear due to problems with the prostate. Acute pain is caused by various pathological processes:

  • Osteochondrosis.
  • Protrusion, intervertebral hernia.
  • Spondyloarthritis.
  • Spinal epiduritis.
  • Spinal fractures.
  • Pathological changes in the hip joints.
  • Sciatica, lumbago.
  • Impaired spinal blood flow of the acute stage.
  • Acute pyelonephritis.
  • Acute appendicitis.
  • Intestinal obstruction.

Chronic pain is caused by pathologies:

  • Ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Deforming spondylosis.
  • Urolithiasis.
  • Osteomyelitis.
  • Scoliosis.
  • Osteoporotic, osteomalacia changes.
  • Oncological processes in the spinal cord, retroperitoneal zone, spine.
  • Spinal infections (with brucellosis, tuberculous infection, epidural abscess).
  • Pathologies of non-infectious genesis (with Reiter's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis).
  • Renal oncology.

Irradiating pain sensations are caused by:

  • Pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Atherosclerosis.
  • Pathologies in the small pelvis.
  • Gynecological pathologies (inflammation of the uterine appendages, uterine cancer, endometriosis, sexually transmitted diseases).
  • Male diseases (prostate cancer, prostatitis).
  • Renal colic, kidney stones.
  • Intestinal diseases (ulcerative colitis, inflamed diverticulum, nonspecific intestinal neoplasms).
  • Exfoliating aortic aneurysm.

Only a doctor can diagnose a patient's condition.

Pain above the lumbar region

If a person has pain on both sides above the back, then he probably suffers from kidney failure, hepatitis, and taking highly toxic drugs. Therefore, the liver is impaired. The patient will develop abdominal distention, vomiting, and a burning sensation in the right hypochondrium. Above the lumbar zone, it may hurt due to acute renal pathologies. Most likely, the person suffers from polycystic disease, pyelonephritis, chronic course, or there are tumors.

If during acute pyelonephritis edema is observed or the ureter is blocked, then the pain is intense, has a dull, aching character. These pains, radiating to the umbilical zone and lower abdomen, are long-term, constant. Another discomfort will appear from the right or left hypochondrium.

Pain below the lumbar region

If it aches and aches in the lumbar segment, then the person probably has problems with the spine. A woman has such symptoms before menstruation. Then the back and abdominal area will be painful. Also, this symptomatology will manifest itself with adnexitis, oophoritis, salpingo-oophoritis. If the lower abdomen is painful, then the bowel function is disrupted or the appendix is inflamed. In this case, the pain will not subside even in the supine position.

lower back pain in men

A man may have a sharp pain or ache in the lower back due to pathologies of the prostate gland or damage to the bladder.

Discomfort on the right and left side

If the right and left sides are painful at the same time, then the person may be sick with pyelonephritis, hepatitis, cholecystitis. Lumbar pain will appear with inflamed uterine appendages or prostatitis. If the posterior segment of the hypochondrium hurts, then the person is likely to have pleurisy, pneumonia. If pain radiates and is felt above or below the lumbar segment on the right, then the patient may suffer from atypical appendicitis or intestinal obstruction.

The causes of pain in the lumbar spine on both sides are associated with vertebrogenic pathologies and diseases developing in the internal organs.

Treatment of lower back pain should begin with an appeal to a doctor who will prescribe diagnostic measures and establish a diagnosis. Untested methods of therapy will only harm, smear the picture of pathology, which will go from the acute stage to the chronic one, and other complications will arise. When the diagnosis is made, drugs are administered.

Are treated:

  • Non-steroidal drugs that relieve inflammation.
  • Chondroprotectors. They will protect cartilage tissue from destruction, restore them.
  • Muscle relaxants. They will eliminate pain, relax spasmodic muscles.
  • Glucocorticosteroids. They eliminate inflammation, relieve severe pain.
  • Vitamins of group B (B1, V12, V6). Applied with non-steroidal drugs.

They are also treated with creams, gels, ointments. With external application of these funds, discomfort will decrease, muscles will relax, and microcirculation will improve. Warming ointments are used, the basis of which is bee or snake venom, red pepper.

Also shown are ointments with chondroprotective action. The use of a special plaster is shown. One plate lasts 12 hours. An inconspicuous strip is worn all day. The magnetized plates are impregnated with non-steroidal agents. If the patient suffers from myositis, radiculitis, osteochondrosis, spondylolisthesis or a person is injured, then they are treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Can be treated with simple pain relievers. Paravertebral blockade is carried out by the doctor with the use of painkillers.

pain in the lower back

Electrophoresis with the introduction of drugs effectively treats pain, special mud, ozokerite with paraffin, turpentine baths, amplipulse therapy, stimulate muscles with electric current. An exercise therapy complex is selected individually by a doctor after the exacerbation has been eliminated. Thanks to gymnastics, muscle tissue will be strengthened, blood circulation will improve. According to indications, a corset is used in order to reduce the load on the spine in case of vertebrogenic pathologies.

Exercises on the simulator have a positive effect on the back muscles. You cannot jump, make sharp turns, swing your legs, run, do strength exercises. Massage procedures that are used after the exacerbation has been eliminated have a positive effect on the lower back. The muscles will warm up, spasm will be eliminated, blood circulation will improve, a person's well-being will normalize.

Approximate set of exercises

Starting position: the patient should lie down. In turn, each leg rises no higher than 10-15 cm. It is necessary to keep the raised leg on the weight for 10 or 15 seconds. Perform 10 or 15 times for each lower limb. In the supine position, the legs are bent at the knee joints at an angle of 90 to 100 degrees. After that, the bent lower limbs are tilted to the right and left until they stop. Perform no more than 15 times.

It is necessary at a slow pace to bend to the right and left with a straight back. Perform inclinations 20 times in one and the other side. You have to get on all fours. Swing right hand and left leg at the same time, then left hand and right leg. Perform 10 to 15 times. Get on all fours so that the stomach is up. Arch the back up and fix this position for as long as possible. Perform 5 times.

Folk ways

Alternative methods are additionally applied to the main treatment; before using them, they consult with the attending physician. With an exacerbation, warming compresses are not used, otherwise pathological changes will become active, the infectious process will progress. Compresses are applied to the lumbar region from burdock leaves. Leaves can be applied fresh or steamed. Use an ointment with a warming effect. It consists of petroleum jelly, rosemary oil, lavender, fir, orange, eucalyptus.

vegetable oil with garlic for back pain

Compresses with vegetable oil and garlic or mustard powder are shown.

They drink chamomile, thyme, St. John's wort infusion. Also, various infusions with decoctions of mint, chamomile, violets, knotweed, calendula, burdock root are used. Use fruits, flowers, plant roots. To activate metabolic processes, reduce inflammation, the intake of poplar buds, wheatgrass rhizomes, valerian, immortelle, snake mountaineer, dandelion, willow white bark is shown.

Ointments are used, the basis of which is pork fat and plantain, pine buds, anise, burdock root, birch and sage leaves. It is important to remember that only a doctor prescribes a therapy plan. Self-medication will lead to negative consequences. If you experience pain that does not last more than 2-3 days, you should urgently seek medical help. Then the pathological process will not turn into a chronic form, the prognosis for the patient will be favorable.
